Airesem

Airesem is a frontier outpost of the Navareo Empire, situated on a Class FIIIm star at the empire's periphery. This strategically vital colony serves as a crucial juncture between the empire's core territories and its trailward edge realms. Located within an interstellar strait, Airesem functions as a funnel for traffic, which has driven its evolution from a modest research outpost to a penal colony over the course of its development.

Geography and Environment

Although generally used as both the name of the world and the system, the world is actually called Airesem IIIa, but the classifier is commonly omitted as it is the only inhabited stellar body in the Airesem system. The landscape of Airesem is characterised by its rocky terrain and hostile temperatures, necessitating the construction of large habitats known as Hab Spheres and extensive atmospheric tents. These structures provide livable conditions for the colony's inhabitants in an otherwise inhospitable environment.

History

Initially established as a scientific outpost for tracking celestial phenomena at the empire's boundaries, Airesem's function changed dramatically with the expansion of the Navareo Empire. To manage its growing territories and control criminal elements more efficiently, the Empire repurposed Airesem as a penal colony. This transition has had a profound impact on the social fabric of the outpost.

Population and Society

Despite its designation as a penal colony, Airesem boasts a diverse population. Current estimates suggest that non-inmate residents, including empire employees, researchers, and service sector workers, outnumber the incarcerated population. However, the presence of the penal colony has left an indelible mark on Airesem's society and culture, often overshadowing the lives of its free inhabitants.

The population breakdown is approximately as follows:

  1. Normal residents (approx. 3 million)
  2. Empire employees (approx. 200.000)
  3. Researchers (approx. 15.000)
  4. Inmates (approx. 5.3 million)

Living Conditions

Life on Airesem is notoriously challenging. The harsh working conditions are exacerbated by the moon's extreme environment and the high-risk nature of the colony's function within the empire. Both penal workers and free residents endure a consistently poor standard of living, further contributing to the difficulties of life on this frontier outpost.

Strategic Importance

Despite its harsh conditions and complex social dynamics, Airesem maintains a position of key strategic importance within the Navareo Empire. Its location within an interstellar strait and on the Star Loop line of the HyperMetro makes it a vital checkpoint for traffic moving through the empire's territories. As such, Airesem is regarded as a critical bastion on the periphery of the Navareo Empire, playing a crucial role in maintaining control over the empire's outer reaches.
