Varyn (species)

The Varyn are a silicon-based sapient species native to the planet Varyn in the Third Arm. First encountered by a joint Tallisite-Navarean exploration team in Year 6, they have since become known for their unique biology, fluid social structure, and their transformation of the planet Tidēs into a popular luxury resort destination.

Biology

Varyn are composed primarily of gelatinous silicon dioxide with a complex internal structure that allows for information processing and energy transfer. They possess limited shapeshifting abilities, typically adopting a vaguely humanoid form when interacting with other species. Varyn reproduce through a process similar to mitosis, splitting into two individuals after absorbing additional mass from their environment.

Their exact method of sustenance remains a subject of scientific inquiry, with prevailing theories suggesting they absorb energy directly from their environment through various forms of radiation or piezoelectric effects.

History and Society

Prior to first contact, the entire planet Varyn was believed to be a single, ambiently conscious organism. Upon interaction with the exploration team, the planet adapted by creating individual Varyn entities. This rapid evolution from collective to individual consciousness has profoundly shaped Varyn society.

Varyn culture is characterised by its lack of formal government, fluid social structures, and communal living. They have no concept of personal privacy as understood by most other sapient species, leading to a highly open and sharing-based society. Decision-making is typically consensus-based, achieved through a process of collective merging and information sharing.

Interstellar Relations

While initially viewed as a scientific curiosity, the Varyn have become known for their friendly, if sometimes boundary-challenging, interactions with other species. Their most significant impact on interstellar society has been the transformation of the planet Tidēs into a luxury vacation resort.

Tidēs Resort Planet

In Year 25, the Varyn began the ambitious project of terraforming the nearby planet Tidēs. Using their unique abilities and understanding of ecosystems, they created a diverse world of heated oceans and varied biomes, catering to a wide range of visitor preferences. The resort is primarily staffed and managed by Varyn, who have shown a particular aptitude for the hospitality industry due to their carefree nature and desire to facilitate enjoyment for others.

Tidēs has since become one of the most popular vacation destinations in the known galaxy, significantly boosting the Varyn's economic and cultural influence.

Controversies

The Varyn's fluid approach to individuality and privacy has occasionally led to misunderstandings with other species. Notable incidents include the Tidēs Merge Incident, where a group of Varyn attempted to include non-Varyn guests in a communal merging, leading to a diplomatic incident that was later resolved.
