Hawking Station (HW)

Hawking Station is a modified research outpost orbiting the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* at a distance of 0.37 light-years. Originally established as a Navareo Empire scientific facility in -8, it has since been repurposed by the Milkwalker Cult as their primary place of worship and observation. The station's unique position provides unparalleled views of the galactic centre's black hole, which the cult considers sacred. While a HyperMetro station does exist in the vicinity, Star Loop trains commonly do not call at Hawking Station.

History

Initially commissioned by the Imperial Science Division as the "Sagittarius A* Observatory", the station was designed to study gravitational phenomena and Hawking radiation. Following the Digital Revolution after the first Universe Fair, the Empire redirected resources towards economic development, leaving the station largely abandoned by year 2.

The Milkwalker Cult gradually occupied the facility between 16 and 18, eventually establishing formal ownership through salvage rights. They have since expanded the original structure using salvaged spacecraft and debris, creating a sprawling complex that serves both practical and ceremonial purposes.

Structure

The station consists of three distinct sections:

  • The Original Core: Housing the primary scientific instruments and living quarters
  • The Spiral Arms: Accumulated spacecraft and modules added by the Milkwalkers
  • The Observation Sphere: A ceremonial chamber facing Sagittarius A*

Religious Significance

The Milkwalkers believe Hawking Station's position relative to Sagittarius A* holds special significance in their prophecy of the Parallel Descendants. The black hole is considered a "Phase Gate" in their theology, particularly relevant to the phases of Loss and Detachment.

Current Operations

While some original scientific equipment remains functional and is maintained by the cult, the station primarily serves as a religious centre. The Milkwalkers continue to observe both the black hole and the surrounding space, interpreting various phenomena according to their prophetic teachings.
